Montoro 12 Gallery presents at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair four young artists from South Africa: Hanien Conradie, Cow Mash, Themba Khumalo, and Chris Soal.
In Hanien Conradie creative practice, she examines human-nature relationships. Conradie is interested in tracking the various paths that have led to human alienation from the natural world in the West, specifically in Southern Africa. She aims to remember and reinstate old ways and to discover new ways of relating to natural places through her creative practice.
Cow Mash is a South African contemporary artist. In her artist statement, Cow describes herself as an artist, who primarily maps her existence through sculptures, and reveals that her self-given name, Cow, guides her creative process. She currently works and resides in Pretoria, South Africa.
Themba Benedict Khumalo was born in 1987 in Soweto and raised in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, South Africa. Khumalo graduated from Artist Proof Studio in printmaking, where he obtained a Design Foundation Certificate. Themba Khumalo’s work looks to interpret life situations through the lens of traditional African religions and spirituality.
Chris Soal is an award-winning emerging artist using unconventional found objects, such as toothpicks and bottle caps, in conjunction with concrete and other industrial materials. He negotiates structural impacts on urban living and reflects on ecological concerns. Soal’s work with beer bottle caps explores the legacy of gold mining in the city of Johannesburg (“the City of Gold”).
