Galerie Cécile Fakhoury presents a personal exhibition of the Ivorian and American artist Ouattara Watts: ‘Ouattara Watts in Dakar’ for this third collaboration between the artist and the gallery.
Ouattara Watts’ link to Dakar is a deep and sensitive one. In his curriculum, a few Senegalese dates punctuate his long international career, and in particular, two years of the Biennial of Contemporary African Art – 2016, which awaited him for so long, and 2018 which finally consecrated him.
The works were designed especially for the exhibition, and everything about them resonates with Dakar, starting with the color palette. The orange pinks, so characteristic of the artist, are very present. They coexist here unprecedentedly with deep blues and sub-Saharan skies, stormy winter grays, and harmattan yellows. The format of the paintings also calls us to Dakar. The large monumental frescoes by Watts, chosen moments of infinite cosmogonies, or visual breaths of the great Ivorian plains give way to more condensed formats where the world is played out on just a few square meters of the canvas.
On display until March 11, 2023.
