Almine Rech New York is presenting ‘The Movement of Material’, an exhibition of new tapestries by Phyllis Stephens, on view until February 25, 2023. This is Stephens’ first solo exhibition with the gallery.

Stephens has previously exhibited with Almine Rech in three group exhibitions: Painting Someone in Shanghai (2021), Un Hiver à Paris in Paris (2021), and August Presentation in Aspen (2021). Phyllis Stephens invited Atlanta-based artist Maurice Evans to participate in the exhibition with a particular highlight of new paintings from his ‘Fiber Secrets’ series.

At the core of this exhibition is an appreciation for the energy of dance. The series alludes to the artist’s history and passion for movement. Dancing has been integral to her creative process and life, transforming any time and space into happiness and inspiration. Reminiscent of family gatherings, time spent with friends, or embracing one’s self, dance transforms an instinctual part of the human experience into a beautiful performance of life itself.
