Everard Read will be at Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2023 with three booths.
The gallery main booth will receive and launch the latest large-scale artwork by Cape Town artist Atang Tshikare: Semela. Semela is a splendorous flowering of seed forms crafted in bronze and glass seed beads. It is an affirmation of divine intervention and transcendence. Evolving from the organic forms of the artist’s smaller Peo e Atang sculpture created in 2021, we now witness new abundant growth. Based on hope, courage and gratitude, Semela represents a journey into self-actualization.
Other artists exhibiting in booth A11 Main Section: Andrzej Urbanski, Angus Taylor, Atang Tshikare, Beezy Bailey, Blessing Ngobeni, Brett Charles Seiler, Brett Murray, Erin Chaplin, John Meyer, Lady Skollie, Lionel Smit, Liza Grobler, Lucinda Mudge, Mark Rautenbach, Michael MacGarry, Nandipha Mntambo, Nigel Mullins, Ricky Dyaloyi, Speelman Mahlangu, and Teresa Kutala Firmino.
Gerhard Marx will be exhibiting in Booth A13 SOLO: Time’s Labyrinth. The artist Gerhard Marx will engage with curator Sean O’Toole’s references to the relationship between drawing and time. For Marx, drawing is an active form of thinking rather than just an act of expression. “One puts a mark down,” he explains, “then steps back to observe that mark with some measure of objectivity before reacting to it by making another. A space is opened between these two positions – between the active mark-making, and considering the mark from a distance as something outside of yourself.
Githan Coopoo will be exhibiting in Booth TT4 Tomorrows/Today: In and Out of Time. The artist will produce a collection of his immediately recognisable amphora-styled vessels, in a series titled unrealistic Expectations. Each of the clay forms will display unique texts and various sentiments that reflect upon the titular trope of the show: the unrealistic expectations of queer relationships.
