A Cape Verdean painter full of light and color. Born on the island of S. Vicente in 1953, where he currently resides, he emigrated to The Netherlands and then to Switzerland, where he studied Fine Arts. He has held various solo and group exhibitions in Portugal, Switzerland, France, Cape Verde, among other countries. Tchalé translates an irreverent way of being in life through his writing and paintings. In an expressionist style populated by burlesque figures, he satirizes the powerful and gives dignity to the unfortunate. His atelier in Rua da Praia, Mindelo, from where you can see the sea and the world, is a fantastic point of observation and creation. Between jazz chords, he slides his brush across enormous canvases, where allegories of a bizarre world inscribe themselves. In this interview, we speak about his career, between literature and painting, his education, the cultural and political problems of the islands, the condition of being Creole, and his enthusiasm and creative drive. Tchalé is a great narrator, in all senses.
