Following her participation at Foreign Agent’s 2022 booth at AKAA in Paris and the 2021 in-house group exhibition MASOLO, Foreign Agent presents the first solo show of Maliza Kiasuwa: “Équilibre Instable”, on display until May 6, 2023.
Through creative blending, Maliza Kiasuwa produces organic works meshing unusual organic and manufactured material fragments. Whether in braiding raffia and rubber or stitching loofah and polyethylene, the assemblage found in a large proportion of her work symbolizes the age-old craft of weaving and patching, often used to expand the life span of discarded objects.
These two techniques are characteristic of crude African artistic ingenuity despite insufficient access to productive means. This starkly contrasts industrial society’s celebrated notion of abundance, which is almost inseparable from our current consumer society.
Maliza Kiasuwa was born in 1975 in Bucharest to a Romanian mother and Congolese father. She is a self-taught, multi-dimensional artist raised between Kinshasa and Brussels.
