Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery presents ‘Fragile’ by Tewodros Hagos, on display until May 20.
Tewodros Hagos, born in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) in 1974, is a promising artist – graduating from Addis Ababa University School of Fine Arts and Design – known for his works which explore the many facets of social injustice faced by migrants. Hagos’ paintings bear witness to the profound transformation and evolution of Ethiopia.
The ‘Fragile’ series displays a captivating set of portraits that capture the vulnerability, conflicting emotional states, and extraordinary resilience of individuals and families compelled to leave their homes because of different social, political, and environmental circumstances. The displayed paintings often feature shapeless landscapes surrounding and enclosing the subject, focusing on psychological struggles related to displacement. They highlight the overwhelming experiences of thirst, dislocation, and loss of childhood faced by migrants. Abstract landscapes emphasize the vulnerability and fragility of the subjects and their environment.
Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery exhibits innovative international artists, both emerging and established, with strong theoretical and aesthetic foundations. The gallery values a multicultural curatorial approach and maintains close relationships with museums and curators worldwide.
