Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery presents Rufai Zakari, Gerald Chukwuma, and Dawit Abebe at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair New York.
Rufai Zakari, born in 1990, explores various themes such as consumerism, environmental pollution, labor, trade, and the consequences of industrialization within modern Ghanaian society. Zakari centers his artistic practice around recycling waste found in the streets of Ghana.
Gerald Chukwuma, born in 1973, is a rapidly emerging contemporary artist from Nigeria renowned for his meticulously crafted sculptures on wood panels. While his materials may be ordinary, he employs a distinctive approach that involves burning, chiseling, and painting. Through these techniques, Chukwuma skillfully captures a multi-faceted history embedded with both personal and political significance, resulting in richly layered artworks.
Dawit Abebe’s, born in 1978, works with vibrant, bold colors, that sometimes contradict the dark subject matter, addressing contemporary concerns such as high-tech, urbanization, and the human idea of progress. In 2001, the artist founded the Habesha Art Studio in his native Ethiopia.
Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery exhibits innovative international artists, both emerging and established, with strong theoretical and aesthetic foundations. The gallery values a multicultural curatorial approach and maintains close relationships with museums and curators worldwide.
