Luce Gallery presents a solo show, ‘Traces of Me’, by Collins Obijiaku, on display until June 30.
Collins Obijiaku, born in 1995 in Kaduna, Nigeria, is a self-taught artist based in Abuja. He specializes in creating alluring portraits of individuals from his home country. Obijiaku’s artwork features captivating gazes and intricately rendered charcoal line work resembling topographic maps. His works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of African Diaspora in San Francisco and the National Gallery of Arts in Enugu, Nigeria.
Obijiaku is an artist known for his portraits exploring humanity’s depths. His works feature composed figures with expressive gazes and winding lines that map the individual’s life journey. The exhibition ‘Traces of Me’ showcases portraits of people the artist has known since childhood, with each painting reflecting a personal connection. Obijiaku captures his subjects’ inner conviction and strength, often using ochre yellow as a nostalgic symbol of intelligence. Through his meticulous charcoal line work, he guides viewers to observe the nuances and empathize with the sitter’s experiences.
