Addis Fine Art Addis Ababa presents ‘Energy Circles’ by Tesfaye Bekele, on display until August 19.
Tesfaye Bekele (b.1982) is a painter based in Addis Ababa who delves into the complexity of systems to seek order. Through a contemplative process, he explores his personal connection with time and space. His work involves zooming in and out of segments of the physical world, paying great attention to detail. Nostalgia and childhood memories form the foundation of Tesfaye’s art, reflecting the inherent conflict and struggle in his creative process through the lines and forms he employs on canvas. He often paints with the canvas on the ground, constructing imagined spaces to incorporate the human body.
With a background in biology and physiology, Tesfaye incorporates his knowledge of the human organism to intuitively explore intricate networks of synapses, muscles, and bones. He applies paint through dripping, scratching, and pouring, resulting in powerful expressions that embody a desire to overcome limitations and find fulfillment in the freedom of artistic creation.
Addis Fine Art, described as one of the “Most Important Young Galleries in the World” (Artsy 2019), has since grown to become one of the leading galleries in Africa, establishing a prominent international platform for artists from the Horn of Africa.
