Ed Cross is pleased to present ‘On Faith’, a solo show of work by award-winning photographer Mário Macilau, on display until August 5th.
Mario Macilau – from Mozambique and born in 1984 – remarkable photographic work has graced numerous international exhibitions, such as the esteemed Venice Biennale, Rencontres de Bamako, and Pangaea at the Saatchi Gallery. His collection has earned a permanent spot at the renowned Pompidou Centre. He has been a finalist for multiple awards, recently winning the Roger Pic prize for his series, ‘Faith’, and he received a special mention for the Quai Branly Museum Prize.
The series, awarded the 31st Roger Pic Prize, documents animist practices in traditional Mozambique religions. The artist, Macilau, focuses on long-term photography projects and environmental issues, using portraiture as a starting point. His work explores the complex realities of human labor and environmental conditions, focusing on isolated communities affected by climate change. The documentary and aesthetic function of Macilau’s work is increasingly important.
Ed Cross collaborates with artists from the African diaspora, aiming to promote conversations between practitioners and international audiences, amplifying historically silenced voices and fostering independent development.
