Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery presents ‘Hands Matter’, a solo show by Dawit Abebe, on display until August 26th.
Dawit Abebe, an Ethiopian artist, uses the human body and symbols to explore societal, political, and cultural behaviors. His latest series, ‘Hands Matter,’ explores Ethiopian history and culture through the use of hands to convey thoughts, desires, and enforce power. Abebe’s latest works explore time, environment, identity, and heritage. His unique artistic style blends painting, drawing, and collage techniques, focusing on the human form. Since his 2009 visit to Omo Valley, Abebe has emphasized the male form, using hands to represent collectives and ways of life.
The series of ‘Hands Matter’ features unique attributes like painted nails, elongated fingers, golden bracelets, and rings, symbolizing commitment and wealth. However, their placement also suggests specific emotions, societal statuses, or intentions. For example, Hands Matter E features a cigar, suggesting authority and masculinity, while Hands Matter O suggests doubt or resignation. Drawing on materials like childhood memories and exercise books, Abebe’s work highlights the power dynamics and potential for change.
Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery exhibits innovative international artists, both emerging and established, with strong theoretical and aesthetic foundations. The gallery values a multicultural curatorial approach and maintains close relationships with museums and curators worldwide.
