Unit London presents ‘Inzalo Ye Langa: Birthplace of the Sun’, Sthenjwa Luthuli’s second solo exhibition, on display until August 24th.
Sthenjwa Luthuli is a highly sought-after young artist in South Africa, showcasing the changing societal environment of his upbringing. His work highlights the constraints on ethnic minorities’ lives, using pattern, texture, and design elements to create visual and symbolic representations. His figures lack heads, symbolizing the link between education and freedom, and are bound by governmental power and insufficient social infrastructure.
The exhibition, ‘Inzalo Ye Langa: Birthplace of the Sun’, explores the ancient African ways of life, focusing on the world’s oldest human-made structures, which served as a primitive solar calendar. The exhibition offers a nostalgic journey to a time untouched by colonial intrusion, showcasing the deep-seated ties with nature and spirituality. It showcases his meticulously crafted and painted creations, paying homage to African heritage and Black ancestral customs. He reflects on colonization’s disconnect between younger generations and their ancient lineage, focusing on African history and spiritual rituals. His vibrant patterns and colorful beads are essential for African healing practices.
