Palais de Tokyo presents ‘L’être, l’autre et l’entre’, by Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien, on display until September 10th.

Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien’s artistry is a rich blend of her Guadeloupe and Ivorian roots. She first engaged with craftmanship during her childhood, guided by her mother and grandmother. After the civil war in Côte d’Ivoire in 2004, she relocated to France. Her work reflects the cultural heritage of the Akan matriarchal societies of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and her Creole background. She merges elements from these diverse cultures into her art, probing the symbols of femininity, traditional crafts, and the impact of industrialization on society.

Palais de Tokyo exhibition, ‘L’être, l’autre et l’entre’, showcases recent and unseen works, reusing a grand stage curtain she created for the Beffroi performance hall. The artifact, initially designed for live performance, is reactivated to create a welcoming stage for visitors. Manlanbien performs poems and rituals, using textile art and costumes to portray characters. The exhibition transforms into a live storytelling platform, involving the artist’s body and voice in the process.

Palais de Tokyo offers visitors a journey through artistic creation and history. It showcases the pioneering work of the previous century’s most significant creators.
