Southern Guild presents ‘Of Space and Time’, first solo exhibition by Jesse Ede, on display until October 19th.
Jesse Ede, an autodidact designer hailing from Cape Town, embraces process-centric approaches to craft his furniture pieces. He primarily employs materials like aluminium, stone, bronze, and brass, showcasing the innate beauty of these unconventional techniques. Ede’s collaborations with Southern Guild stem from his innovative experiments with open-cast smelting, emphasizing the natural essence of his chosen mediums. He personally procures his materials, journeying to local quarries to handpick unique elements such as Malmesbury slate or granite. Each endeavor pushes the boundaries of Ede’s skill set.
The display delves into Ede’s fascination with cosmic events and the tangible nature of stone and metal. Showcased are a collection of grand sculptural pieces, encompassing a granite and bronze seating and Solaris, offering visitors an engaging and transformative journey. Ede’s distinct open-cast smelting technique ensures the metal’s gradual cooling, enriching the viewer experience. Incorporating local Cape heritage stones like Malmesbury slate, Paarl granite, and sandstone speaks to Ede’s reverence for the region’s natural ecosystem. The art pieces highlight the compelling balance between the raw essence of these natural elements and the human endeavors to mold them into their end-purposeful shapes. The display maps out Ede’s cosmic narrative, inviting attendees to immerse themselves in his astral realm via mutual engagement.
Southern Guild aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of humanitarian, environmental, and societal concerns with targeted projects, large-scale installations, and immersive experiences. Their artists explore personal narratives, cultural structures, and social change.
