Kalashnikovv Gallery, participating for the very first time in the Contemporary Istanbul art fair, presents Theresa-Anne Mackintosh, Turiya Magadlela, Craig Smith, and Kylie Wentzel, all from South Africa, on display until October 1st.
Theresa-Anne Mackintosh, a South African artist, has a diverse artistic practice including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and digital media. She uses a quiet but deep personal touch, showing an understanding and sensitivity to the human experience through her unique visual styles.
Turiya Magadlela, a South African artist, uses traditional women’s art techniques to create abstract compositions on fabrics like pantyhose and correctional uniforms. Her work explores personal experiences of womanhood and motherhood, as well as the colonization of black bodies and women. Magadlela has received numerous awards and recognition.
Craig Smith, a Johannesburg-based artist, photographer, and designer, uses ambiguity and texture in his paintings, drawing the viewer in with subtly suggested shapes. His work is influenced by Cy Twombly and contemporary South African painting, blending abstraction and narrative with bold allusions.
Kylie Wentzel, a graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She trained in printmaking and now lives and works in uMdloti, KwaZulu-Natal. Her style is graphic and intuitive, inspired by natural and constructed environments, kitsch prints, and street art.
