193 Gallery presents ‘You Thought You Could Throw Me Away’, by Thandiwe Muriu, on display until December 30th.

Thandiwe Muriu, born in Nairobi, Kenya, began her photography journey at 14 and has since become a professional photographer. Her first solo advertising campaign was at 23, and she has captured campaigns for major East African corporations. Her Camo series, inspired by her encounters with societal roles and tradition, reflects her personal artistic exploration. Muriu reinvents contemporary African portraiture, offering a daring new portrayal of women and their independence. She continues to teach photography workshops and freelance assignments.

Globalization has shaped our perception of Africa, often perpetuating a warped reality. Thandiwe Muriu’s unconventional journey challenges conventional paradigms and illuminates the beauty of her reality. Her project, ‘You Thought You Could Throw Me Away’, demonstrates the quintessence of her work, urging audiences to re-evaluate notions of identity and expression. Muriu’s work extends to women worldwide, challenging the universal demands, expectations, and critiques faced by women. Over the past three years, Muriu has carved a resounding identity that demands recognition, positioning herself among the echelons in the reclamation of African narrative and imagery.
