For Paris Photo 2023, 193 Gallery presents ‘1445 in Paris’, a solo exhibition by Hassan Hajjaj.
With ‘1445 in Paris’, 193 Gallery presents a selection of works based on musical rhythm, movement and interaction, invoking a plurality of series. 1445 is the current year in the Hijri (Muslim) calendar. The exhibition presents a selection situated in the time and space of Paris Photo 2023 at the Grand Palais Éphémère, emphasizing that standards can differ from one person to another.
Christopher Spring, curator of the North, East and South Africa at the British Museum, describes that “Textiles and music are central to the work of Hassan Hajjaj – surrounded by the sounds of musicians from around the world, he makes cloth, he cuts cloth, he conceals in cloth and he reveals through cloth; music and textiles provide the language and landscape in which he plays and in which appear the many characters he creates.”
In 2019, Hassan Hajjaj had a major retrospective at Maison européenne de la photographie in Paris. In 2023, his work has been exhibited at Brooklyn Museum (US), Tate Modern (UK), Saint Louis Art Museum (US), and National Portrait Gallery (UK).
