Kunsthal KAdE presents ‘Africa Supernova’, an African painting collection of Carla and Pieter Schulting, on display until January 7th, 2024.

‘Africa Supernova’ showcases the self-awareness and global position of artists from the continent. The collection, featuring 125 works from 33 African countries, encompasses sculptures and photographs, highlighting the artists’ self-reflection and the global impact of their imagination. The exhibition also presents an extensive catalog with 232 pages, an interview with the Schultings, essays by Azu Nwagbogu and Raphael Dapaah, and about 150 biographies of the showcased artists. The Schultings emphasize the diversity and dynamism within the African art scene, stating that the term “African art” cannot encapsulate the vast array of artistic expression across the continent.

The exhibition aims to provide an overview of the young artists putting Africa on the global art map, with the hope that this period will be recognized as a significant chapter in art history in the future. In the larger perspective, the ‘Africa Supernova’ exhibition serves as a conduit for the world to experience the rich, complex, and promising artistic development unfolding in contemporary African art.

Located in Utrecht, the Netherlands, Kunsthal KAdE hosts exhibitions on contemporary art, architecture, and visual culture, without housing its own collection. Open to global inspirations, it also organizes lectures, tours, and discussions to engage the public.
