OpenArtExchange presents ‘Down to Earth’, a group exhibition by Steve Bandoma, Julien Degan, and Thierno Diallo, on display until January 20, 2024.
Steve Bandoma, a Congolese artist, born in 1981, challenges academic art norms through his work, which blends sculpture, painting, drawing, and collage. His work reflects Kinshasa’s vibrancy and African society, incorporating chaos, humor, and political commentary, and presenting critiques of policies.
Julien Degan, a Benin artist born in 1962, is known for his unique art style. His unique blend of abstract and tribal sculptures, including burned wall sculptures, showcases his cultural roots.
Thierno Diallo, a self-taught artist, was born in 1968 into a prominent family. A descendant of Thierno Bokar, he initially pursued Koranic studies but shifted his focus to calligraphy and drawing at age 10. His teachers often asked him to create maps and scientific illustrations.
The ‘Down to Earth’ exhibition features the works of three solo artists from DR Congo, Benin, and Mali. Inspired by the documentary “Down to Earth,” the artists explore the strained relationship between society and nature.
Steve Bandoma from DR Congo presents ink-on-paper paintings, Julien Degan from Benin showcases burned wall sculptures, and Thierno Diallo from Mali features wooden sculptures. Their art forms range from abstract to tribal, offering layered pictorial commentary on humanity’s history and lessons learned over thousands of years. The exhibition explores humanity’s connection with nature and calls for a new balance in this relationship.
