Southern Guild presents ‘Black Exodus: Summer Departure’, a solo exhibition of new works by Oluseye, on display until January 25, 2024.

Oluseye, a Nigerian-Canadian artist, born in London, in 1986, uses “diasporic debris” to explore themes related to Black existence. He transforms artifacts and materials he collects during his travels across the Atlantic into sculptures, performances, and photographic works.

His work, particularly in the Eminado series, links the ongoing journey of the Black diaspora across generations. Oluseye’s artistic practice is rooted in the idea of Blackness as a divine, fluid entity, transcending time, space, and geographical boundaries. The artist’s work explores Black and Diasporic cultures, migration, and spiritual traditions, enriched by his personal narratives.

The exhibition explores the complexities of Black identity and its diverse expressions and migrations through sculpture, installation, and photography. Oluseye transforms “diasporic debris” into talismans, symbolizing pleasure and protection, reflecting the experiences of Africans during their journeys across the Atlantic.

‘Black Exodus: Summer Departure’ features the Eminado Series, an installation of over 100 palm-sized talismans, symbolizing comfort and danger. The central piece, “Patra (Mothership)”, draws inspiration from Jamaican Dancehall star Patra and represents empowerment. Oluseye’s journey involved engaging with local artisans in Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal, South Africa, Kenya, and more, reimagining materials laden with histories of enslavement and colonial conquest as symbols of power and resilience.

Southern Guild focuses on enhancing awareness of humanitarian, environmental, and social issues through specific projects, expansive installations, and engaging experiences. Their artists delve into individual stories, cultural frameworks, and shifts in society.
