Galerie Cécile Fakhoury presents ‘Signes’, a premier solo exhibition in France, by Souleymane Keïta, on display until January 27th.
Souleymane Keïta, a renowned Senegalese artist, was a key figure in the art scene of Senegal during the latter half of the 20th century. His work, influenced by his travels to Mali and New York, Mandingue heritage, and connection to Gorée Island, was a blend of modern and contemporary art styles.
Keïta’s art is mysterious, symbolically rich, and combines abstract elements with figuration, creating a tactile and emotive experience. His works often depict a struggle between darkness and light, reminiscent of sunlight piercing through water or the glimmer of stars in the night sky. The exhibit features works from 1994 to 2005, showcasing Keïta’s penchant for series, such as “Chemise du chasseur,” “Scarifications”, “Criquet”, “Gorée”, and “Synthèse”. Keïta’s abstraction is sensory and vivid, evoking sensations of sea air, sun-baked earth, the brilliance of the sun, and the ominous approach of crickets.
