Galerie Voss presents ‘Pedestal’, by Idowu Oluwaseun, on display until February 3rd.
Idowu Oluwaseun, a Nigerian artist born in 1982, resides and works in Houston, Texas, USA. He graduated from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2013 and is known for his blend of painting and fashion design, creating portraits that capture the spirit of black individuals. Oluwaseun’s work primarily focuses on elevating women and giving prominence to their perspectives, particularly in African culture. His exploration of empowerment themes is influenced by iconic African figures like Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. His artistic expression reflects various social and political contexts.
‘Pedestal’ is a celebration of African women’s resilience and beauty. It includes a collaboration with Nigerian fashion designer Ejiro Amos Tafiri, known for her culturally rich and innovative designs. The exhibition focuses on the role of women in African culture and challenges traditional power structures. A key piece, “Propped,” symbolizes a shift in conventional power norms. The exhibit draws inspiration from historical figures like Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, honoring their contributions to Africa’s socio-political landscape. The paintings capture the essence of the women depicted, with their faces obscured by fabric, communicating their stories through the cloth’s shape and color.
Galerie Voss was founded in 1992, in Düsseldorf. Since then, it has worked exclusively in international contemporary art and is chiefly dedicated to figurative painting, photography, and installations.
