Bemis Center presents ‘Neo-Custodians: Woven Narratives of Heritage, Cultural Memory, and Belonging’, an exhibition curated by Nneoma Ilogu, the Bemis Center’s 2022–2023 Curator-in-Residence, featuring the works of thirteen artists, on display until April 14th.
The African artists in this group exhibition are El Anatsui, Sanaa Gateja, Enam Gbewonyo, Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, Seydou Keita, Nnenna Okore, and Yinka Shonibare.
These artists use textiles as a medium for communication and representation, exploring themes of migration, identity, and environmental sustainability. The exhibition is not just a display of artistic talent but also a journey of discovery and reinterpretation. The artists challenge traditional narratives through their manipulation of materials, examining personal, socio-political, and global histories.
The exhibition encourages viewers to consider the past, understand the present, and contemplate how these influences the future, underlining the importance of revisiting history to forge new pathways of understanding and appreciation.
The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts promotes contemporary art through international residency programs, exhibitions, and educational initiatives, valuing creativity, diversity, and open exchange of ideas, aiming to create an inclusive, accessible space for all.
