October Gallery presents ‘Transvangarde: Free Style Cipher’, an exhibition of new works by Sokari Douglas Camp CBE, Alexis Peskine, and Govinda Sah ‘Azad’, on display until March 2nd.
The exhibition is unique in its embrace of the hip-hop ethos of dynamic and interactive exchange of diverse artistic ideas and styles. Sokari Douglas Camp’s steel sculptures explore feather symbolism and historical ties to colonialism, while Alexis Peskine’s “nail portraits” explore themes of Black identity and the African diaspora.
Govinda Sah’s paintings emerge from layers of acrylic, representing a prolonged, introspective dialogue with the canvas. Susan Kessler’s diverse creations explore lines in various forms, linking her extensive body of work through this central theme. Golnaz Fathi presents bold, enigmatic works layered with meanings, while Tian Wei bridges Eastern and Western aesthetics with monochrome works that reveal English text upon closer inspection.
‘Transvangarde: Free Style Cipher’ concludes with Jukhee Kwon’s sculptural transformations of ‘found’ books and Romuald Hazoumè’s impromptu masks, reflecting his sharp social commentary and humor.
