Afriart Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Ugandan modernist painter Samuel Kakaire at Art Dubai 2024, on display from 1 to 3 March.
As part of the “Art Dubai Modern” section, the exhibition, curated by Dr. Christianna Bonin, an expert on Cold War-era cultures and global modernisms, will highlight the contributions of artists and filmmakers from the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia who participated in cultural exchange programs with the Soviet Union.
Born in 1961 in Uganda, Kakaire pursued his education locally before earning a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Higher College of Industrial Art in St. Petersburg, Russia. Despite European influence, Eastern European art remains largely unexplored in Uganda.
Kakaire’s ascent to prominence in the art world is a notable exception, as he is proficient in tempera, oil, and watercolors, creating both miniature and large-scale mural paintings. His pieces often revolve around a significant theme or figure, echoing the essence of Russian iconography. By mastering Russian icon painting, Kakaire has recontextualized it to reflect Uganda’s unique landscapes and narratives, diverging from its religious origins in Russia.
