Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery presents ‘A place where everything becomes a possibility’, by Gerald Chukwuma, on display until March 30th.
Gerald Chukwuma, a Nigerian artist known for his intricate wood panel sculptures, incorporates historical, personal, and political narratives into his work. Graduating from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2003, he employs techniques like burning, chiseling, and painting, while also addressing environmental and ecological issues through his art.
Chukwuma’s latest collection showcases fluid figures, plant life, spiraling symbols, and geometric shapes on burnt, engraved, painted wood panels, alongside glistening tapestries made from flattened metal cans. Taking nearly four years to complete, this body of work reflects Chukwuma’s dedication to a collaborative and reflective creative process, deeply rooted in Igbo cultural traditions. Embracing the igwebuike concept, which advocates for community unity, his approach to art is a collective journey, especially highlighted during the Covid pandemic when materials like metal cans became a creative resource. This series reflects the interplay between art and the spiritual world.
Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery exhibits innovative international artists, both emerging and established, with strong theoretical and aesthetic foundations. The gallery values a multicultural curatorial approach and maintains close relationships with museums and curators worldwide.
