Christie’s Hong Kong presents ‘Coalescent Lights’, curated by Kami Gahiga. This is the third 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair iteration, but the first in Asia. It’s on display from the 26th to the 30th of March.
Kami Gahiga is an art curator and advisor based in London and has made significant contributions to the field of contemporary art. She has written a series of essays for catalogues on contemporary artists, actively participates in international art exhibitions, and has shared her expertise on the contemporary African art market through lectures at both Sotheby’s Institute of Art and Christie’s Education.
‘Coalescent Lights’ is an exhibition honoring eminent figures featured at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair. It explores various conceptual themes spanning different artistic eras, underscoring 1-54’s dedication to broadening discussions around contemporary African art. ‘Coalescent Lights’ features a thoughtfully selected collection of works by artists who have notably influenced and contributed to the narrative at 1-54, featuring a wide range of media such as painting, photography, sculpture, and textiles.
This exhibition is segmented into five thematic areas: the fusion of tradition, spirituality, and ancient wisdom with personal and cultural narratives; explorations of intimacy and the physical form; investigations into environmental and material limits; notions of translocation and transience; and an examination of representation and visibility across various mediums.
Drawing inspiration from French-Cameroonian curator Simon Njami, ‘Coalescent Lights’ aims to display the rich diversity of talent in contemporary African art, highlighting its interdisciplinary essence.
