1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair returns to New York today

The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair hosts its New York 2024 edition at The Starrett-Lehigh Building in Chelsea, New York City, on display until May 4th.

The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair hosts its New York 2024 edition at The Starrett-Lehigh Building in Chelsea, New York City, on display until May 4th.

The event, which is dedicated to contemporary African art and its diaspora, features over 30 galleries and 70 artists from Europe, Africa, and the United States. The New York fair features 32 galleries, including eight first-time participants, showcasing their unique contributions to contemporary African art.

The fair’s Special Projects section will partner with Black Rock Global Arts Foundation, featuring a booth with alumni artists Grace Lynne Haynes, Tajh Rust, and Collins Obijiaku, presenting diverse portraits that explore diasporic experiences and perspectives.

The event is a hub for creativity and culture within the Chelsea Arts District. The fair’s founder, Touria El Glaoui, expressed enthusiasm for its return to New York after previous editions’ success, highlighting the outstanding selection of galleries and programming for this year.

The fair continues to promote global awareness of the art-historical importance of African modern and contemporary art, significantly influencing the art market and discourse since its inception in 2013.
