193 Gallery presents Christa David at 1-54 New York, on display until May 4th.
Christa David is an artist, writer, and researcher who uses painting, collage, and assemblage to create narratives exploring themes of home, belonging, faith, and identity. Drawing inspiration from artists like Romare Bearden, Wangechi Mutu, and Alma Woodsey Thomas, as well as James Baldwin’s literary contributions, David meticulously constructs narrative collages using materials from historical archives and contemporary publications.
Her work has been exhibited in private and public collections across the US, including the David C. Driskell Center. David is a double alumna of Columbia University, holding both Bachelor of Arts and Masters degrees, and continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression.
193 Gallery, founded in 2018, is dedicated to fostering cross-cultural appreciation by showcasing art from various artists, including emerging talents and established figures. The name ‘193’ represents the UN’s total count of recognized countries. Since its inception, 193 Gallery has engaged with a diverse range of artists, bridging local art communities with the global stage. Notably, it made a significant impact during the 2022 Venice Biennale, showcasing art for six months, and highlighting the gallery’s mission to present contemporary artistic expression to a global audience.
