Ed Cross Fine Art presents Abdulrazaq Awofeso and Ugonna Hosten at 1-54 New York, showcasing their unique artistic styles, on display until May 4th.
Hosten uses bare wood and pencil and charcoal on paper, blending dreams, visions, and emotions into impactful visual stories. Her paper works explore pre-colonial spiritual traditions and mystical themes, while Awofeso’s sculptures are robust and rough, influenced by his travels between Nigeria and England. His portrait series encourages direct interaction with viewers, while his new series, “Okrika,” features garments on hangers that explore personal style and the socio-economic implications of Western fast fashion’s impact on Africa.
The exhibition presents two perspectives on the African diaspora: Awofeso captures contemporary life in Nigeria and England, reflecting the complexities of these environments, while Hosten explores the deep spiritual heritage of the Igbo people, examining how ancient traditions influence our collective present.
Together, the artists offer a layered examination of identity, both individual and collective, inviting viewers to reflect on complex, evolving narratives.
Ed Cross Fine Art collaborates with artists from the African diaspora, aiming to promote conversations between practitioners and international audiences, amplifying historically silenced voices and fostering independent development.
1-54 features leading international galleries specializing in contemporary African art, complemented by artist talks, panel discussions, and a Special Projects program. The fair’s name is a tribute to the fifty-four countries that constitute the African continent.
