193 Gallery presents ‘This or That?,’ a solo show by Sesse Elangwe, a self-taught painter from Cameroon, on display until June 29th.
Sesse Elangwe, born in 1994, moved to the United States with his family in 2020. He now resides in San Antonio, Texas, and his paintings reflect personal and societal narratives, incorporating elements of realism, pop art, and surrealism. His signature asymmetrical-eyed portraits invite viewers into a profound dialogue about identity and experience. Elangwe’s art has been exhibited at prestigious collections like The Green Family Art Foundation in Texas, the W Art Foundation, and the Xitang Foundation in China.
‘This or That?’ explores the emotional and existential dilemmas of choosing between dreams and expectations, contrasting the perceptions of those who stayed in Cameroon with the realities of those who migrated to the U.S. Elangwe’s paintings also feature children, symbolizing future responsibilities and legacies. The exhibition includes mirrors as metaphoric elements, encouraging introspection and dialogue.
193 Gallery, established in 2018, combines art, travel, and discovery, displaying contemporary art from diverse cultures and countries, avoiding clichés, and showcasing promising artists.
