Gasworks presents ‘Alternative Central Area Locations,’ an exhibition by Rahima Gambo, which showcases her artworks tracing Abuja, Nigeria’s history, and current, and future landscapes, on display until September 8th.
Rahima Gambo, born in London in 1986, is an artist specializing in documentary, psychogeography, sociopolitics, ecology, and autobiography. Her work is process-oriented, cyclical, collaborative, and continuous, emphasizing repetition and return. She has exhibited at various prestigious venues and is currently studying at the Royal Academy Schools in London.
‘Alternative Central Area Locations,’ curated through archival documents and blueprints, explores the city’s origin as a “planned city” in the 1980s. Abuja was established when the Nigerian government relocated the capital from Lagos to a centrally located site on the Gwagwa plains, driven by strategic centrality and perceived ethnic neutrality. Through film, sculpture, and installation art, Gambo delves into the decision-making processes, overlooked details, variations, and emergent needs of the city’s planned design.
Gasworks, established in 1994, is a non-profit visual art organization that connects UK and international art practices. It provides studios for London-based artists, commissions international artists for exhibitions, and runs a residency program.
