Iziko Museums of South Africa presents ‘Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective,’ curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, on display until August 11th.
Dr. Esther Mahlangu, born in 1935, a renowned visual artist from the Ndebele nation, has been a celebrated figure in South Africa’s contemporary art scene for over 70 years. Recognized for her innovative approach and ability to engage with a broad audience, she has collaborated with celebrities, global brands, and major museums. Mahlangu’s unique blend of traditional and contemporary Ndebele design principles has elevated her to a cultural icon status.
‘Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective,’ which opened on February 17, 2024, at the Iziko South African National Gallery, celebrates over fifty years of Dr. Esther Mahlangu’s significant contributions to the contemporary art world. The exhibition will continue until August 11, 2024, before embarking on a global tour, including stops at the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg and venues in the United States by early 2026.
Organized by The Melrose Gallery, the showcase features over 100 artworks, historic photographs, and a short film, including the BMW 525i Art Car, which marks its return to South Africa for the first time in over 30 years since Dr. Mahlangu became the first African and the first woman to be invited to the prestigious BMW Art Car Collection in 1991. The retrospective celebrates Mahlangu’s unique integration of African cultural traditions with contemporary themes, highlighting her pioneering voice, innovative spirit, and resilience. The exhibition showcases her versatility across mediums, including sculptures and ceramics, and encourages reflection on broader societal themes and historical narratives.
