Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery presents the exhibition ‘When Dusk Falls’ by Jamie Luoto and Tonia Nneji, which explores the psychological effects of trauma on the female body. On display until August 31st.

Jamie Luoto’s paintings, influenced by occult and horror genres, depict the invisible scars of sexual abuse, such as flashbacks and dissociation. She also introduces still lifes, such as “The Douter” and “At the Event Horizon,” which feature cat-like behaviors and condom motifs to symbolize the lingering presence of abusers. “The Black Fell Open” is a standout piece, depicting a naked figure and a black cat in a complex interplay of exposure and protection, surrounded by unsettling elements.

Tonia Nneji, a Nigerian artist, tackles the suppression and violence against women through cultural and religious influences. She uses customized religious fabrics as symbols of entrapment, which her figures subvert through their own modifications and bold gestures.

Both artists use the female body as a marker of violence and a bastion of resistance, challenging viewers to confront and not turn away from the discomfort these themes evoke.

Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery exhibits innovative international artists, both emerging and established, with strong theoretical and aesthetic foundations. The gallery values a multicultural curatorial approach and maintains close relationships with museums and curators worldwide.
