Southern Guild Cape Town presents ‘Like Something Almost Being Said,’ by Adam Birch

The exhibition explores themes of life, renewal, and transformation, promoting a culture of exchange and interconnectedness.

Southern Guild Cape Town presents ‘Like Something Almost Being Said,’ a solo exhibition of functional timber sculptures by South African artist Adam Birch, on display until 22 August 2024.

Adam Birch, a South African artist, uses locally harvested wood to create each piece by hand. His work includes forked seats and large-scale sculptures representing a unique, interactive dialogue between the artist and his materials. Birch’s approach is one of discovery and adaptation to the wood’s inherent properties, emphasizing refinement over construction. With over two decades of experience as an arborist, Birch brings an intimate knowledge of wood characteristics to his art. The artist also uses unconventional tools like chainsaws and spray paint to define and excavate his pieces, integrating elements and the environment into his creative practice.

‘Like Something Almost Being Said’ showcases Birch’s signature forked sculptures, which merge functionality with aesthetic form. Drawing inspiration from Philip Larkin’s poem “The Trees,” the exhibition’s title reflects themes of life, renewal, and transformation. Birch’s sculptures transcend their material origins, embodying a new life and purpose that challenge our perceptions of art, nature, and functionality.

Southern Guild, established in 2008, represents contemporary African artists, focusing on themes like cultural preservation and ecology. It expanded to Los Angeles in 2024 and supports artists through education and collaboration. The gallery promotes a culture of exchange and interconnectedness.
