Ed Cross presents Joseph Awuah-Darko’s debut exhibition in London, ‘How is your day going?’, following his 2024 residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut. On display until October 19th.
Joseph Awuah-Darko is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores historical and autobiographical themes, incorporating Kente textiles and oil stick paintings. His works are part of numerous collections and he is an active curator and founder of the Noldor Artist Residency.
Awuah-Darko’s latest works feature biomorphic shapes against bands of color, evoking Ghanaian Kente cloth and Sean Scully paintings. The palette combines pale blue with luminous orange and deep mauve with claret-clear red. Awuah-Darko’s new Days paintings are based on detailed Excel spreadsheets tracking his moods, initially conceived as a therapeutic tool for managing recurring depression.
‘How is your day going?’ presentation, with the gallery walls painted in colors drawn from the works themselves, mirrors the intensity of the artist’s journey. Visitors are invited into an immersive and intimate dialogue with the pieces, delving into Awuah-Darko’s inner world while being prompted by the exhibition’s title to reflect on their own.
Ed Cross collaborates with artists from the African diaspora, aiming to promote conversations between practitioners and international audiences, amplifying historically silenced voices and fostering independent development.
