Artist Cheikh Ndiaye participates in the 2024 Busan Biennale, themed “Seeing in the Dark,” from August 17th, tomorrow, to October 20th.

Cheikh Ndiaye, born in 1970 in Dakar, Senegal, is an Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts graduate and has a keen interest in architecture and urbanism. His artistic expressions include paintings, photographs, films, and installations, offering unique perspectives on everyday life. Ndiaye has held solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions, including the 13th Havana Biennale in Cuba, Sanguine. Luc Tuymans on Baroque at the Prada Foundation in Milan, and Brises-Soleils des Indépendances at the 13th Dakar Biennale in Senegal. He has also been active in academic circles, receiving the Naturalis Art Temporary Prize in Berlin (2012) and the Linossier Prize in France (2008).

The 2024 Busan Biennale, under the theme “Seeing in the Dark,” explores the human condition within contemporary “darkness.” It seeks to challenge conventional thinking and address today’s complex realities, such as systemic changes and surveillance, within existing social structures. The exhibition reinterprets “darkness” and “vision” broadly, encouraging a deeper exploration of sensory perception and enlightenment beyond mere physicality.

The Busan Biennale, inaugurated in 1998, has evolved into a premier contemporary art event in Asia. Its objectives include highlighting contemporary artistic trends, facilitating cultural exchanges, and nurturing discourse among artists, curators, and the public.

Galerie Cécile Fakhoury presents ‘Des exploits, des chefs-d’oeuvre,’ a group exhibition, at the [mac] musée d’art contemporain, Marseille, on display until September 8th.

Art and sports often intersect in contemporary society. Frac Sud – Cité de l’art contemporain has commissioned curator Jean Marc Huitorel to create an exhibition titled ‘Des exploits, des chefs-d’oeuvre.’ The exhibition, spanning three cultural institutions in the Southern Region and Marseille, features over 350 works from nearly 100 French and international artists. It also aims to engage with the essence and manifestations of sporting events through symbolic objects, offering a unique perspective for reflection and enjoyment.

As Marseille prepares to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the dialogue between art and sports becomes particularly relevant. Supported by the Région Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, the French Ministry of Culture, and the City of Marseille, the exhibition has earned the Paris 2024 label and stands as a cornerstone project within the Cultural Olympiad in France.

Among the featured artists is Mariam Abouzid Souali, born in 1989 in Targuist, Morocco. Her art, evoking childhood memories through play, showcases childlike figures in landscapes with altered architecture, typically devoid of children. Souali juxtaposes rural settings with aspects of liberal globalization, highlighting the connections between childhood and the world’s developmental pace, inequalities, and the impacts of industrial advancement. Her work encourages viewers to reflect on global inequalities and the consequences of industrialization.

Galerie Cécile Fakhoury promotes contemporary African and Diaspora art through curated exhibitions, international fairs, and partnerships, encouraging reassessment of world views and connections.

The [mac] musée d’art contemporain de Marseille is a modern and contemporary art museum with a collection of around a thousand items, including works from New Realists, Figuration Narrative, Arte Povera, American conceptual art, Fluxus, and Supports Surfaces. The museum also showcases installation, digital, and video art, and features a garden with sculptures.

African Arty presents ‘The Children’s Republic’, by Dieudonné Djiela Kamkang, on display until March 31st.

Dieudonné Djiela Kamkang, a master’s degree holder from Beaux-Arts University in Douala, creates art in Lagos, focusing on youth and historical knowledge. His work explores the concept of “restitution” and traditional culture, inspired by the Sankofa principle. Dieudonné has participated in numerous exhibitions and art fairs, including those at Art X Lagos and Arco Lisboa.

‘The Children’s Republic’ explores the futuristic vision of children ascending to leadership roles in a society, and navigating through historical challenges. Drawing from Guinean director Flora Gomez’s film, it showcases art depicting these young individuals overcoming adversities and envisioning a futuristic society. The display celebrates community and playful interaction, highlighting the natural capacity of children to bridge divides across social and ethnic lines. The use of materials like Ndop fabric and Western clothing styles symbolizes embracing cultural and societal diversity.

This initiative aims to foster unity by reflecting on the uninhibited ways children from various backgrounds come together. It also encourages viewers to journey back to their cultural and ancestral roots for a deeper understanding. The artworks encourage contemplation on themes of resilience, communal bonds, and cultural esteem, urging an introspective connection with one’s heritage.

African Arty aims to be more than just a gallery; it seeks to be a cultural nexus, inviting a diverse audience to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of African artistry.

Worldfaze Art Studio will be launched on August 20th with exhibitions by Daniel Tetteh Nartey and Jephthah Aikins Bentsil-Kobiah, current artists in residence, on display until December 20th.

The Art Residency was founded in 2011, and now is the time to oficially launch its Art Studio. This contemporary art studio in Ogbodjo, Accra, offers exhibitions, workshops, and residencies. It aims for sustainability, growth, professional development, connections, and interdisciplinary collaboration, attracting creatives and enthusiasts.

Daniel Tetteh Nartey, a multidisciplinary artist, explores the intersection of art and the human body through his paintings. He explores the role of different body parts in human mobility and societal structure, emphasizing harmonious collaboration for shared objectives. In his exhibition, ‘Blue Heaven’, he showcases his innovative methods in exploring his transformation as a color theorist and a genre-defying surrealist artist.

Jephthah Aikins Bentsil-Kobiah, a multidisciplinary artist, creates vibrant, colorful canvases addressing political and social disparities. His work often narrates the journey of Africans seeking greener pastures in foreign lands for survival. In his exhibition, ‘Things For Change’, his allegorical paintings address infrastructure, environmental degradation, and resource allocation in Ghana, promoting justice and progress through symbols and symbolism.

Worldfaze, an art residency in Accra, Ghana, nurtures emerging contemporary artists through a three-month program, offering workspace, housing, and mentorship, fostering practice development through workshops, seminars, and collaborations.
