Southern Guild Los Angeles presents ‘signifying the impossible song,’ a group exhibition curated by Lindsey Raymond and Jana Terblanche, on display until November 14th.

‘Signifying the impossible song’ features 17 artists, focusing on the intersections of material culture and hidden knowledge within objects.

These are the featured artists: Sanford Biggers (USA), Kamyar Bineshtarigh (Iran/South Africa), Patrick Bongoy (DRC), Ange Dakouo (Mali), Bonolo Kavula (South Africa), Nthabiseng Kekana (South Africa), Roméo Mivekannin (Ivory Coast/France), Turiya Magadlela (South Africa), Nandipha Mntambo (Eswatini/South Africa), Zanele Muholi (South Africa), Oluseye (Nigeria/Canada), Zohra Opoku (Germany/Ghana), Zizipho Poswa (South Africa), Usha Seejarim (South Africa), Inga Somdyala (South Africa), Moffat Takadiwa (Zimbabwe), and Lulama Wolf (South Africa).

The show explores themes of integration, disintegration, defiance, and displacement, presenting the human experience as a continuous cycle of creation and re-creation. Artists like Sanford Biggers disrupt historical narratives by juxtaposing cultural symbols, while Bonolo Kavula focuses on shweshwe cloth, meditating on care, preservation, and ancestral history.

This group exhibition also highlights the human impulse to collect items of spiritual and cultural significance, transforming everyday materials into powerful commentaries on post-colonial economies, ecological degradation, and identity complexities.

The experience concludes with a reflection on the ongoing nature of consensus-building and representation, echoing Adamshick’s poem, where the ideal of a unified symbol fades, leaving behind the eloquence of the process itself.

Founded in 2008, Southern Guild represents contemporary African artists, focusing on cultural preservation and ecology. Expanding to Los Angeles in 2024, the gallery fosters education, collaboration, and a culture of exchange.

Ed Cross presents Joseph Awuah-Darko’s debut exhibition in London, ‘How is your day going?’, following his 2024 residency at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut. On display until October 19th.

Joseph Awuah-Darko is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores historical and autobiographical themes, incorporating Kente textiles and oil stick paintings. His works are part of numerous collections and he is an active curator and founder of the Noldor Artist Residency.

Awuah-Darko’s latest works feature biomorphic shapes against bands of color, evoking Ghanaian Kente cloth and Sean Scully paintings. The palette combines pale blue with luminous orange and deep mauve with claret-clear red. Awuah-Darko’s new Days paintings are based on detailed Excel spreadsheets tracking his moods, initially conceived as a therapeutic tool for managing recurring depression.

‘How is your day going?’ presentation, with the gallery walls painted in colors drawn from the works themselves, mirrors the intensity of the artist’s journey. Visitors are invited into an immersive and intimate dialogue with the pieces, delving into Awuah-Darko’s inner world while being prompted by the exhibition’s title to reflect on their own.

Ed Cross collaborates with artists from the African diaspora, aiming to promote conversations between practitioners and international audiences, amplifying historically silenced voices and fostering independent development.

‘Memoria : récits d’une autre Histoire’ is an exhibition that explores the concept of collective memory, a tapestry woven from diverse personal stories and experiences.
The Kingdom of Benin, a prominent state of the Edo people, was established with significant influences from Ife, where the art of brass casting was introduced in the late 14th century.

This technique was used to create commemorative heads for royal altars, freestanding figures, group sculptures, and plaques. The Portuguese, who began contact with Benin in the late 15th century, brought illustrations from books to influence the design and narrative content of these plaques. However, brass casting had been introduced at least a century earlier, with bronze bars being used for bracelets.

Cult objects, such as memorial beads, were made from wood for nonroyal purposes, while the king’s regalia was made from brass. Coral beads and red cloth were also used, symbolizing a mystical threat to the kingdom’s enemies. Wood was used for ancestor staffs, pottery heads for shrines, and life-size mud sculptures of royal figures for the cult of Olokun, the divinity of the sea and wealth.

Dalila Dalléas Bouzar, a contemporary, poetic, and committed artist, is featured in the “MUSE Découverte” art tour, at Saint-Dizier, Maubeuge, and Barentin, on display until September 19th.

Born in 1974 in Oran, Algeria, she grew up in Paris and showed a talent for drawing. After pursuing higher education in biology, she reconnected with art and began working with oil painting. She graduated in 2003 from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Bouzar’s work explores memory, identity, and the condition of women, highlighting inequalities and spiritual quests. She joins feminist artists like Niki de Saint Phalle, Louise Bourgeois, Indian artist Nalini Malani, and Afghan artist Kubra Khademi. Her art is expressed through classical means of painting, drawing, embroidery, or performance, and she does not hesitate to stage herself.

Bouzar’s portraits and self-portraits focus on the human figure, often made up with tribal masks, giving off an aura of mystery and spirituality. Her work “Princesses” depicts women’s faces, inspired by photographic portraits by Marc Garanger, highlighting the respect they deserve.

MUSE Découverte offers an 18-part, chronological exploration of art history, spanning from the ancient Lascaux caves to contemporary art. It features high-definition reproductions and interactive features for an engaging and enjoyable learning experience.

Gallery MOMO presents “FOREWOMEN,” a group exhibition that reimagines and enhances the contemporary art scene through the perspectives of its exceptional participants, on display until September 14th.

“FOREWOMEN,” inspired by Nina Simone’s song “Four Women,” pays tribute to the legacy of Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. These brave women led the historic march to the Union Buildings in 1956 in protest of apartheid laws. The exhibition brings together the diverse voices of the featured artists, each adding their unique narrative to the larger story of South African art.

Nina Simone’s “Four Women” serves as a powerful commentary on the intricate dynamics of race, gender, and identity. Contemporary South African artists explore themes such as cultural identity, social justice, and the reimagining of traditional narratives. These artists challenge stereotypes and redefine their roles within society and the art world through their individual artistic practices.

“FOREWOMEN” is a movement that recognizes the historical and ongoing challenges faced by women, amplifying their voices in today’s world. By drawing parallels between Simone’s evocative storytelling and the compelling narratives of the featured artists, “FOREWOMEN” underscores the enduring power of art to inspire, provoke, and transform.

Gallery MOMO invites viewers to engage with and be moved by the works of Mbali Tshabalala, Tshepiso Moropa, Farhana Jacobs, Samantha Maseko, and Lerato Nkosi.

Gallery MOMO, founded in 2002, promotes emerging African contemporary art trends and nurtures artists in the diaspora. It provides a space for artists to flourish and influence the art world.

Galerie Cécile Fakhoury Paris presents a group exhibition titled ‘Apparitions,’ featuring works by artists such as Assoukrou Aké, Jess Atieno, Dalila Dalléas Bouzar, Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux, François-Xavier Gbré, Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien, and Roméo Mivekannin. On display until September 14th.

Aké’s work combines various artistic mediums to create a healing narrative, reflecting the social, medical, and political history of Africa. Atieno’s work explores the idea of place and belonging, incorporating archival images and documents to explore dispossession. Dalléas Bouzar’s work explores the role of the painter and the history of art, focusing on Algerian historical violence. Deloumeaux’s visual narrative blends personal anecdotes with global chronicles, inviting viewers into private, nostalgic realms.

Gbré’s work explores memory and societal shifts through architecture and landscape, revealing a world in transition within environments shaped by history and contemporaneity.
193 Gallery presents ‘A Gift of A Lifetime’, a solo show by Ekene Stanley Emecheta, on display until August 24th.

Nigerian self-taught artist Ekene Stanley Emecheta, born in 1994, divides his time between London and Nigeria, teaching art in China. He primarily creates figurative works using oil and acrylic on canvas, exploring themes of human energy, personality, and identity. His solo exhibition “Truthful Waters” in Athens received acclaim in Frieze Magazine. His art is featured in prestigious collections and showcased at art fairs like Art Basel, Frieze London, The Armory Show, Frieze LA, FIAC, and Félix Art Fair.

The artist explores the lessons imparted by life through his oil and acrylic paintings, capturing the essence of humanity and encouraging personal identity contemplation. Emecheta challenges traditional views on skin color by painting his figures predominantly in white, urging viewers to consider the soul’s universal nature.

‘A Gift of A Lifetime’ celebrates the myriad of experiences essential for personal growth, enhancing self-awareness and adaptability. It encourages viewing life as an ongoing education, where each moment enhances our understanding of the world and our role within it.

193 Gallery, founded in 2018, is dedicated to fostering cross-cultural appreciation by showcasing art from various artists, including emerging talents and established figures. The name ‘193’ represents the UN’s total count of recognized countries. Since its inception, 193 Gallery has engaged with a diverse range of artists, bridging local art communities with the global stage.
