The architect in focus for the month of September is J. Yolande Daniels (Los Angeles, USA, 1962).
J. Yolande Daniels is an Associate Professor and Director of Architecture and Urbanism at studioSUMO West in Los Angeles and co-founding design principal of studioSUMO in New York.
Her portfolio includes institutional and cultural initiatives in education and the arts, as well as multi-scale housing developments. Daniels’ research focuses on the spatial impacts of race and gender within the built environment, with a particular emphasis on uncovering narratives of resistance and autonomy.
Her contributions have been extensively published and exhibited, with notable examples including the anthology In Search of African American Space: Redressing Racism and the project “Black City: The Los Angeles Edition” featured in the ‘Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America’ exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art.
Daniels has received numerous accolades, including being a fellow of the American Academy in Rome and a recipient of the Rome Prize in Architecture. She holds a Master of Architecture from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the City University of New York.
