Mickalene Thomas is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists working today, celebrated for a practice that has transformed contemporary visual culture. Born and raised in New Jersey and now based in New York, she has developed a distinctive and instantly recognisable aesthetic that spans mixed media painting, photography, film and installation. Through these varied forms, Thomas examines the complexities of Black identity and womanhood, engaging critically with the narratives and exclusions of the Western art historical canon.

Her work is anchored in a deep commitment to material experimentation and to the power of images to reclaim presence, memory and authorship. Alongside her artistic practice, she is an educator, mentor and curator whose leadership has shaped new pathways for emerging artists. Her exhibitions have been presented across leading international institutions, including Musée de l’Orangerie, the Bass Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the Seattle Art Museum, among many others.

Thomas’s work forms part of major public and private collections worldwide, reflecting her significant contribution to contemporary art. Her numerous awards and accolades further affirm the cultural impact of her practice and her continued influence on future generations of artists.
