Artist in Focus: Titus Kaphar

Titus Kaphar has dipped paintings in tar, whitewashed a canvas while performing onstage, and cut central figures out of his portraits; his fierce creative and destructive acts offer new paths forward for art, away from its white, hegemonic traditions. Born in Michigan, Kaphar graduated with an MFA from Yale in 2006. He lives in New Haven, Connecticut, where his practice spans painting, sculpture, film, and installation work. Kaphar has exhibited at galleries across the world and enjoyed solo shows at institutions including the Studio Museum in Harlem, MoMA PS1, and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. In 2018, he became a MacArthur fellow. Kaphar is also the founder and president of NXTHVN, an arts incubator and residency program in New Haven focused on mentoring and developing new generations of artists and curators of color.
