Safaa Erruas: “Inhabiting the Interstice” (29 September – 7 November 2026)

Safaa Erruas’s latest body of work continues her exploration of crossings and borders. In this vein, she now considers routes of passage and transit, including the notion of the strait, as spaces to be inhabited, more or less hostile or hospitable. These territories, as geographical as they are internal, which she calls the “interstice,” lead her to use her preferred materials—paper, cotton, pins, needles, glass fiber and metal wire—to trace pathways that maintain a balance between emptiness and fullness, between shadow and light, and between the accumulation of motifs (parallelepipeds, strips of paper and interwoven lines extending into grids) and their hollowing out.

Cartographies of the intimate emerge through a range of artistic interventions that may just as readily carve fissures into the fragile weave of the paper as compose, through meticulous gestures reminiscent of embroidery, interlacings of sinuous forms. A slender thread thus seems to connect arms of the sea and continents, like invisible ridgelines that both shape and unsettle our very being.
