Mahi Binebine (b. 1959, Marrakesh, Morocco) moved to Paris in 1980 to study mathematics, which he taught for eight years before fully dedicating himself to writing and painting.
After publishing his first novel, “Le Sommeil de l’Esclave”, in 1992, Binebine moved to New York in 1994, where his paintings are included in the permanent collection of the Guggenheim Museum. Binebine returned to France in 1999, however due to the tense political climate, he decided to go back to his hometown of Marrakesh, where he currently resides and works.
One of Morocco’s most famous and prolific artists, Mahi Binebine’s books have been translated in over fifteen languages, and his artwork is displayed in prestigious museums and collections worldwide.
The WAAU team had the honor of, once more, meeting with the celebrated Moroccan artist Mahi Binebine. After a productive collaboration in Lisbon, in what was our first exhibition “World African Artists United”, we now meet in the city of Marrakech for a delightful conversation. We would like to express our gratitude to Mahi Binebine for gifting us his time so generously.
