The exhibition Black Bullets is an homage to the Haitian Revolution of 1791, when enslaved Africans rebelled against colonial rule. This period was known for its brutal slavery practices, where enslaved people were forced to work under harsh conditions. Henri Christophe, the first black Haitian monarch, built a fort on a mountaintop to protect Haiti from French invaders. This fort was later used as an inspiration for the Haitian revolution, the only successful slave uprising in history that led to Haiti’s independence in 1804. Jeannette Ehlers is a Danish-Trinidadian artist, who addresses issues of memory, structures of racism, and colonialism by utilising her own body and image manipulation in her works. Her artworks, installations, photographs, and videos emphasize that history is not just the past. Colonialism still influences power and resource distribution around the globe as well as in the Nordics.
