On view from 23 September to 13 November, Sojourner: The Difference is the Same presents a new body of mixed-media sculptural works that extends Maggie Otieno’s longstanding practice of transforming reclaimed materials into forms that hold and reconfigure histories. Working across wood, metal, and found materials, Otieno turns matter shaped by movement, labour, and infrastructure into sculptural forms that reflect on memory, continuity, and change. The exhibition brings together works centred on historic railway sleepers alongside new works developed during the artist’s residency at El Anatsui Studio in Ghana, where fragments of wooden canoes become vessels for stories of passage and renewal.
